The first time I visited the Arribes in April of 2006, I was instantly bewitched by the savage beauty of the region: the deep gorges of the Duero and the Tormes, the steep terraces, the ancient vines and even older olive trees; the way the village perched on its rocky outcrop, like the prow of a ship, the way the houses were built around the boulders and the countless cellars hand-hewn out of the granite rock many hundreds of years ago.
Here man has moulded the land to suit his needs, but he has never managed to tame it. The endless terraces are testament to the courage and determination of those who transformed this inhospitable land.
Today the region is home to wonderful wines, cheeses and olive oils, an impressive collection of some of the world’s rarest birds and quite simply breath-taking views. I cannot imagine a better reason to come and spend some time with us.
A guided tour at the hands of the winemaker of the cellars where the wines are born and raised: the visit starts in the five-hundred-year old cellar where the wines are aged in barrel, after which we go down to the “discotheque” where we taste three different wines.
